P01: CROP

[WITH JULIO TORRES SANTANA, SAMPATH PEDIREDLA, & SAMUEL MADDOX - STUDIO INSTRUCTORS, ARCHITECTURE; WITH JENNY FRENCH - COORDINATING FACULTY, ARCHITECTURE]

During the course of Project 01, students learn the basics of orthographic projection while also experimenting with inventive representation techniques. Measured and appropriately line-weighted multi-view sets of orthographic projection drawings (plan, section and elevation) serve as the technique for the former. Analytic drawings, serial drawings, layered drawings, and drawings that capture multiples through traceries serve as exemplars of drawing techniques that capture the animate qualities of the latter.

Two questions guide the design process:

  • How do we describe three-dimensional volumes through a set of two-dimensional drawings?

  • How can two-dimensional drawings advance beyond mere description and into the territory of speculation?
